I love trying out new recipes and this black bean burger recipe is one of my new favorite dishes to make. It’s such a great alternative to your traditional meat patty and you really wouldn’t think it was made out of black beans, the flavor is great and it’s very hearty. I love a good burger, but sometimes it’s nice to mix it up a bit and make something a little different and this black bean burger fulfills the burger craving.
It was one of those meals I tried at a restaurant – and for the life of me can’t remember which one right now – and I really loved it and decided I could probably very easily recreate it at home. And it was very easy!
First, start by cracking open a can of black beans (or two) and drain them, but they don’t need to be rinsed. Add them to a medium sized bowl and then take a fork and mash them up. You can mash them a little or a lot, just depends on how you want the texture to be. I like mashing them up a good amount but I still like there to be some chunks.
To the same bowl, add the egg, breadcrumbs, onion and a little salt and pepper. You can either dice up the onion very finely, or you can grate it, which is what I did because I don’t like the raw onion flavor. Then mix up the ingredients with a fork until they’re completely incorporated.
This part is where you could have a little fun. Typically I would use black beans when making Mexican food, so you could add a little taco seasoning in with the black beans and then top it was cheddar cheese, avocado, tomato, olives, etc. There’s lots of different options to play around with!
When you form the patties, you really can make them as thick or as thin as you’d like. The first few times I made them I would make 3 patties using one can of black beans, which was the ideal thickness. But this last time I made 4 patties out of one can which worked great, even though they were a lot thinner, because then we each had a leftover patty for lunch the next day. Or you could even make 2 large/thick patties using one can. Up to you!
Cook the patties for just a couple minutes on each side, they just need to get hot all the way through. If you’re making thinner patties it only takes 2-3 minutes on each side and if you’re making bigger/thicker patties it takes about 5 minutes on each side.
Once they’re done you’re ready to assemble.
I like adding slices of avocado, tomato, lettuce and topping it off with sriracha mayo or a garlic mayo. The black bean patty is a delicious alternative to your regular beef patty and I was definitely not disappointed. I’ve made them several times now and love them even more! If you’re looking for a new dinner idea this is perfect and so easy to make for a couple people or for a family.
Enjoy!
