I read about The Bachelor Farmer first in the Star Tribune when it was named Best New Restaurant in the Twin Cities. Then I saw an article in the City Pages. And soon after, a friend from Milwaukee’s visit triggered the perfect reason to try it out!
Since TBF celebrates its Nordic heritage, I can only assume that the radishes, lemon, and salt on the table as we were seated are a Nordic tradition. Radishes aren’t usually a food I enjoy eating raw, but those few bites changed my perspective entirely.
We started by sharing the Baked Camembert cheese and winter vegetables toast and of course, a bottle of wine. YUM! It managed to be homey and light at the same time. Ordering another “toast” was tempting, but we wanted to save room.
With 5 of us at the table, three of us opted for the Roasted duck breast, duck leg confit, ginger-braised red cabbage a la Georges Perrier, while Sara had the Market fish, emmer wheat, yogurt, grilled cucumber, and Kael went for the highly acclaimed Meatballs, lingonberries, mashed potatoes, pickled cucumber. I was tempted to order the meatballs as well because I had read some great reviews, but they reminded me too much of IKEA…
We all shared the Curried cauliflower gratin and Roasted sunchokes with thyme sides. Again, we gushed over how great each dish was and how they all added something to our main courses.
I can confidently say that we all adored our meals and pretty much licked our plates and bowls clean. Texture and flavor married extremely well in each dish.
We couldn’t resist the dessert: popcorn ice cream, chocolate ganache, and salted caramel on shortbread. This wasn’t much to look at, but it was absolutely delicious. Again, I don’t think there was a drop left on the dish.
My only regret is that I didn’t get any pictures! The atmosphere was so cozy and dim that I didn’t want to annoy others with camera flashes. This picture is from the drink we got at the Monte Carlo after dinner .
